It’s definitely not an easy world to live in and prayer for both husband and wife is desperately needed for a healthy marriage. While I do plan to have a “ways to pray for your wife”, I know that my audience is mainly women reading so I thought I would start with the how we as wives can pray for our husbands.
1. Pray for his work: Work can be responsible for a lot of the stress and pressure our husbands feel. It can also be a sense of excitement and accomplishment. As a wife to Jacob, who works in the corporate world, I’m both excited for his success, but it’s also tough to see the hardship of the demands. Through the good and bad, the ups and downs, I want to pray for my husband in his work, his leaders, co-workers, clients and the workplace environment. All of which can influence a mans pride, joy and self-esteem, which can then impact his physical well-being, and his relationships, including the marriage.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you would guide the hands and feet of my husband in his work. I pray that you would bless him and give him wisdom in all the decisions he has to make. For peace in tough situations, for encouraging words and conversations. I pray for guidance and knowledge in his leaders, coworkers and all throughout the work space. I pray for open doors, and that they would be prosperous. Thank you, Lord, for my husband and the skills you’ve gifted to him.
Psalm 90:17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.
2. Pray for strength and courage : We live in a world full of temptations. Temptation doesn’t often care that you’re married-whether it’s on TV or real life. Men in general our very visual beings. As a psychology major, I’ve spent some time studying behaviors and effects. I know for a lot of women these visual struggles from their husbands can cause deep insecurities. While many men have the strength to quickly re-focus their attention from the visual temptation, many have given in. It has torn countless marriages and relationships a part-I’ve seen it in churches, friends, and family. While the temptation in itself can’t always be removed or changed, we as Godly wives can dive into deep prayer for our husbands, his life, and the marriage- that God would provide them with the strength and courage to turn and not dwell on the temptations.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you would guard my husbands heart and mind from the temptations that may come his way. I pray that you would give him the strength and the courage to turn or walk away if needed and fill him with all things good and positive. Thank you, Lord, for going before my husband, leading and directing him in the way he should go.
1 Corinthians 10: 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
3. Pray for healing of his past: In any relationship, there is often a “past”. I’ve seen strong men completely fall a part because their past of hardship and pain was not dealt with in a healthy way. We all have a past, we all need healing from things that have hurt us and scarred our lives. Men often have a harder time dealing with their past because they often try to be less emotional. They want to push it to the back, mask the emotions, work hard and “move on”. However, the things that were pushed to the back can often well up later on in a relationship and it can hurt everyone involved. Let’s pray that there would be healing in our husbands lives, no matter how how far back it stems.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray for restoration and healing in my husbands life. No matter how far in the past, I pray that you would bring comfort and encouragement to him in his life. Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity of restoration and healing that you give to those that seek you.
Jeremiah 30:17 But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD.
Isaiah 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Psalms 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
