Peace is something we all want in our lives, but it’s also something that we rarely feel. With everything going on in our personal lives, and the world around us, it’s hard to feel that freedom that peace gives. My brain is constantly going 100 miles a minute. I’m always going over my to-do list, thinking about the next day, week, month and year. Jacob is always telling me that I think too much, and he is probably right. Having anxiety doesn’t help me one bit either. Peace for me, and most, is very hard to come by.
The world around us may never be at peace, but as a Christian we can rest in knowing that our TRUE and REAL peace comes from God, not the things around our external being. Here’s what the bible says about peace:
True peace comes from our relationship with Christ, not the things of this world.
Often times we think we can just rely on ourselves, or things in the world to give us peace. I used to think, all I needed to do was put on a face mask, relax and things will get better. However, am I supposed to do a face mask every time there is a troubling situation? I would literally need to do it everyday then. Relying on external things won’t bring us true and everlasting peace. That peace can only come from enhancing our relationship with God.
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Troubles may still come, but we can rest assured that Jesus is our rock and our source of peace.
We aren’t promised a trouble free life once we become a Christian. What we are promised is that if we trust in the Lord, He will be our source of peace and strength. He can calm our fears, break the chains and heal our wounds.
I’ve been a Christian for about 20 something years, and I can attest that my life isn’t trouble free. Through the pain, heartache, anxiety, stress etc…I know I can turn to God, who is bigger than my troubles. When we turn to him in our excitement, and in our despair, God will be there as our rock and source of peace.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
God wants us to be peacemakers.
God gives us as Christians a gift of peace through Him, and He wants that peace to be evident in our lives and the people around us. Not that we need to be passive, but that we can show others true joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
“Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” James 3:18
I remember being in a situation recently that made me so uncomfortable it made my skin crawl, stomach turn, and I could feel my insides just well up with all kinds of emotions. There was certainly no peaceful feelings. I’ve learned that when I start to feel this way, I need to slow myself down and spend some time in meditation. Meditation for me often means praying, breathing exercises, and just taking a little timeout. I pray that God gives me the strength to handle things that make me feel uncomfortable, and direct me when things are out of my control. I can typically walk out of prayer feeling a little lighter, filled with God’s peace. While God may give me the true and real gift of peace, it doesn’t mean that the uncomfortable situation just disappears. So, when I have to walked back into it, I wanted to have the peacemaker mindset. You know what, I was actually able to smile through the uncomfortableness. God wants to give you this true and real peace, all you have to do is trust and seek Him.
Pray with me: Lord, I know that when I seek you, I will find my source of peace. I pray that you will lead and direct me though the ups and the downs that life brings, that you will fill me with your true and real peace! Amen
